At the moment I find the initial "primer" part of the game very difficult for a new player or perhaps not so much difficult as just awkwardly paced.
Building up a simple ship that has any real base capability so that you have the speed you need to explore far enough from the starting base to find the other major stations requires you to go up and fight crap enemies until you have enough decent engines and weapons to get you going.
Even with the increase to oxygen time, I find I still only have enough time to fight one enemy and grab the parts I need off them and assemble them (pretty hastily really) before I need to fly back to the oxystation to ensure I arrive there safely and not die due to losing all my oxy.
This creates a very annoying initial experience in my in my mind as I have to ferry between the low level ships and the oxy station between pretty much every kill before I can really do anything that fun in the game.
I know that thematically it makes sense that I have to fly right up to an oxy station to use it but I like the idea of oxy stations having more range than that. They shouldn't have as much as say, a nav station, but almost as much. I feel the game would be more playable if you had these sort of safe areas where you can connect to oxy and nav stations and safely farm lower level ships for parts, just to get you started. Only the crappiest of crappy ships would be in this radius where you can refill your oxy. To find anything interesting like other stations, fancy ships, etc etc, that would be outside this range and require you to take a risk of running out of oxy and try to explore further out there.
Just my read from playing.
As for how this bigger more nav station like radius for oxy stations could be explained, maybe oxystations send out drones to refuel you after you contact them? That would look pretty cool.
