Wow this is awesome! Farbs, I don't know if you knew you were doing it, but making it so we all play the same map, atleast for the time being is really bringing the community together in a unique way since everyone (including the creator of the game) is discovering the game as we all play. Like the big map thats being made is really awesome. Congrats for making something completely new and unique.

Wow, that's fantastic! I notice it's an image file - what are you using to composite this? Some sort of ascii art text editor?

what you can do is post nav station exports. make sure your ship dosent cover anything up.
im using JavE 5
aaand i just lost my ship cause i pressed f5 while not in focus.
mapping will resume once i re-upgrade my ship... !@#$!@#$!$@
serously farbs you gotta do something about that.

The colony also has a factory selling Juliet lasers, which I was more than happy to find. I recommend banking as much as you can at the stations to the north. When I approached this area was full of India and Juliet boot/jackers, and I could easily have lost my ship. This map was assembled using JavE, which works really well for this. Great find kingoftaurus!

Epic exploring kingoftaurus! JU!!
Have you found any MKII booster factories out there?
By the way, the FJ on the right of my bit of the map makes torpedo launchers, and one of the FH south of it makes India level bubble shields.
I've been wondering if we could improve the map by replacing the F of factories with a single character to show what they make. I know Farbs already has ACSII representations of ship parts, but they take more than one character per part. I've come up with the following key, but i'm not totally happy with it yet. Revision welcome.
module types: : - laser v - prismatic laser ! - snipe launcher @ - sprinkler ^ - rocket launcher * - torpedo launcher > - ramming spike ] - booster u - unibooster = - twin booster } - MKII booster o - translocator x - transrotator r - repair # - blurst shield b - bubble shield c - chronogear a - air g - girder
I've tried to keep weapons pointing up (exception: ramming spikes), and boosters pointing left. As we're not showing enemies on the maps we're compiling, we can reuse lowercase letter for this and i have where i've run out of other ideas. Are rockets, ramming spikes and prismatic lasers too similar? (And no, i'm not really expecting air or girder factories.)
Other interesting things to depict are the limits of nav station scan range, and the limits of nav station reception. It might be best to go back to image files to do that though.

and drat: i seem to have screwed up joining on the bottom right bit of my map. You can tell because the stations don't line up, but i'm not sure if i'm off by one or three horizontally, and don't have time to fix it now. sorry.

ill fix it. i see the error. mapping will resume shortly
edit: wow you screwed up pretty bad. ill fly over there and fix it.
edit# 2 : again the white area is not KNOWN how it connects. the northmost white area could be accurate but i didnt fly that way to find out.
whilst fixing the errors, i found a repair tool factory outside of ANY nav beacon range.
i was super excited to see it, and i wondered to myself how many other things out there are off radar.
methinks there should be a limited onboard scanner tool on your ship so you can make accurate maps.
the way it is right now, theres a LOT thats really hard to connect because i cant place them by grid coordinate because the grid system isnt known to me.
i tried but i always get the x coordinate wrong by at least 2 y is easy though.

For weuner.spaceport (i think that's the name, im reading off my notes) you have it like:
It's to the south of NASA (The spawn) OADA
OD?? ND
The ?? is a SD

Have you found any MKII booster factories out there? Yes, theres one near the juliet upgrade. i dont feel like going back and listing all the factories so ill do that on the next map. this ones just about complete i think.. i cant seem to find a connection with the southern and northern area yet. lotta blank space between the two and its VERY scary exploring that area EDIT: FINALLY FOUND A CONNECTION now the map is nearly comple

At 130x 55y (NE of and close to the OCRC stations which itself is east of the origin dock.is a pair of OC and SC stations called churchill.colony. Like the other 2 station clusters nearby it isn't mapped by any other nav stations. edit: It is in fact, just south of the cluster of Bravo stations you've marked in a box. edit2: screenshot for clarification

Here's how i think the coordinates work: the numbers change in-between grid lines, so if you sit your command module on an intersection you are exactly in the middle of that coordinate. The stations are set out on an 8 by 8 grid, offset by 4,4 from the origin. So every station coordinate is 4 + a multiple of 8. If you sit on an intersection near a station it's not too hard to work out what its coordinates are. On the map, stations are 1 character high and two characters wide, so moving up 1 map character is y+8, and moving right one is x+4. The way i tried to join maps that didn't overlap is i recorded the coordinates of the nav stations. Calculated the difference in coordinates, divided the x value by 4 and the y value by 8. Put my cursor (in JavE) on the N of one nav station, then moved it that many characters across and up and made a mark to line the other nav station up over. What i know went wrong with my map above is i stupidly divided the x value by 8 instead of 4. But i think i made other errors as well as trying to fix that without going back to all my individual maps didn't work. I've tried to record coordinates for all the nav stations i've taken maps from, but i know i've got a couple of the y coordinates wrong by looking at my ship's angle instead of its y value. But that doesn't seem to explain what went wrong either. So good work kingoftaurus patching up my mistakes. What goes wrong for you when you try to align maps by coordinates? p.s. as well as your RD station group in the radar hole, there's a 4-station group of SF,OF,RF,rF (FF making repair tools).

OK, I've made a grid of coordinate numbers and re-done the first quadrant of my map from my files. It's come out slightly different from kingoftaurus' fix, but that's probably my fault for giving him duff data in the first place. I've added indication of which bits are out of nav scan range. You can easily remove that by search and replace. The stations i've shown in the gaps are positioned based on my records of their coordinates, so should be accurate. I found an RF station instead of the RD kingoftaurus mentioned. I don't know if he got that wrong or if the RD is still out there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ . Another map of the first quadrant. The . regions show the range of the nav stations. The : regions show whether nav stations can see each other. If their : regions touch or overlap they can. If there is only 1 character gap vertically or 2 characters horizontally then the one below / to the right can see the one above / to the left, but not the other way round. Bigger gaps you have to cross by blind exploration in both directions. I've deleted the asteroids to make things clearer. The extra spaces on the right seem to be a bug in the forum - they aren't in my data. ........................................ ........................................ ........................................ ........................................ ........................................ ........................................ ............::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::SEOEBE::::::............ ..........OJ::::::::NE::::::::............ ............::::::::::::::::::............ ............::::::::::::RF::::............ ........................::::::::::::OF::::............ ........................::::::::::::::::::............ ..........................::::::::::::OH::::.......... ..........................::::::::::::::::::.......... ........................................ ..........................::::::::::::::::::.......... ........................................ ..........................::::::SHOHDH::::::.......... ........................................ ............::::::::::::::::::::FHNH::::::::.......... ........................................ ............::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::.......... ........................................ ............::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::............................................................ ............::::::::::DI::::::::::::::::::::................................::::::::OJ::::::::.......... ............::::::::NIOIFISIDI::::::::::::::................................::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::OIFI..............................................::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::::::..............................................::::::::::::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::::::..............................................::::::::NE::::::::.......... ............::::::::::::::::::..........................::::::::::::::::::..::::::FEOE::::::::.......... ........................................................::::::::::::::::::..::::::::::::::::::.......... ........................................................OI::::::::::::::::..::::::::::::::::::.................................. ........................................................SI::::::OD::::::::..::::::::::::::::::.................................. ..............................::::::::::::::::::........::::::::ND::::::::...................................................... ..............................::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::...................................................... ..........................::::::::::::::::::::::UF::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::...................................................... ..........................::::::::::::::::::::::OF::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::...................................................... ..........................::::::OE::::SERE::::::NF::::::::::::::SFOF::::::::::::::::....FDOD..................::::::::::::::::::.......... ..........................::::::::::::OE::::::::::::::::::::::::::NFRF::::::..................................::::::::::::::::::.......... We'll let this one slide for now. if i try too much harder to fix the mapping errors right now im bound to lose my ship.
as far as nav station range goes.. not sure if thats necessary all that much.
as far as your reply, the only way im ever off on my maps by counting coordinates is the x position. i nail the y on the head every time.
so the up/down position is easy
ill look into it more later.
the next map will be much more thorough.
as far as fixing your errors, i actually exported each nav station data to fill in the messups. if there was anything that you posted outside of radar thats on the map, then thats the only thing that could still be messed up and unverified.
tl:dr
next map will be much more thorough and accurate.
