Hi all. Now that there are oxygen modules in the game I'd like to know how you feel about their distribution. If there's anything else you'd like to say about them other than the options here then please shout out in a post below.
Thanks!

I've found 2 already, both of 'em near the starting point too. Doing multiple sessions farming low tier ships near starting docks works better than searching for one oxy module for hours in a single session.

They're quite tiny and usually attached directly to the command module. They're quite weak too so you need to be v careful not to damage them.

I found a Bravo oxygen module within a few minutes of playing, but my oxygen never got below 15 L on my initial playthrough (from all the hours of playing 0.1, I guess), so I didn't really have a use for it. I find that the game world feels empty now that I'm no longer looking at the oxygen meter most of the time.

i agree a little bit, ive found 3 now, and with all the mapping ive done, (and familiarity i have with where i am) i feel that oxy is a bit less of a problem now. and now that i have and invincible ship, with the ability to reach out to far out places safely.. im wondering what else there is..
we'll see

Oxygen modules are a part I'll never use due mostly to their massive weight. Although it turns out that their rarity is included in scrap calculations so I made a whole lot of cash off of the few that I have found.

It seems that they spawn in the same way as other modules... meaning that on starting a session, each zone will decide on a few modules that ships spawning there will use.
This is somewhat problematic, as it means that when you do happen to get oxygen spawning, you'll get a lot of those modules since many ships in that zone will have them. The same problem applies to shields and repair modules... if you happen to find a zone that spawns enemies using these modules, you can get dozens pretty quickly.
So... I'd say oxygen is both too rare and too common. It's extremely unlikely that a zone will decide to spawn oxygen modules, but when it DOES happen, you get a lot of the things.

That's a very interesting point jwill. Thanks for bringing it up. I had to check my code to confirm, and It seems oxy modules are distributed as extremely rare "special" modules. Each clump of ships chooses one special module type and uses it very very sparingly. If there were many special types then this would lead to the behaviour you're describing, however there are currently only two (oxy and chrono) so the clumping should be so rare as to almost not be apparent.
If what you describe is common then it may point to distribution problems in the game's random number generator. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Thanks again.

Whoops, I probably should have mentioned that I've only ever found three oxygen modules, so my observed behaviour could very well be a statistical anomaly. The three I did find were all at once, on a couple ships in one zone.
I like the way chrono gear modules are spread out, so if oxygen modules use the same code that's probably excellent.
While we're on the subject of module distribution, it's always seemed a bit odd to me how the giant Juliet vessels often only have three types: one offensive (eg torpedo), one booster (eg twin booster), and juliet girders. I know it would probably be a pain to code, but it might make high level ships more interesting if they had more variety.
On the other hand, I suppose there's an argument for distinctive ships in given zones.
Anyway, no matter what you decide going forward, I'll still be enjoying this ridiculously fun and innovative game.

They look like miniature versions of the oxy tanks you find on oxy stations. Because they're only 1x1 in size they look very much like normal girders unless you zoom in.
I've found several already, but since I'm playing in 0.3 inferno almost all of them went into the flaming asteroids... I've only managed to salvage one so far! D:

I regularly find ships with two oxy tanks on them. Finding one is definitely not hard once you've got a supercruiser, but is sparse enough to make it challenging early in the game.
Chrono gears on the other hand seem to be much more rare.
