As we know, the Forever games feature very limited sounds, bar explosions, lasers, communications, VMED interfaces etc..
In long sessions, I like to listen to music to help set an atmosphere. In no particular order, here are my favourites: > Tron Soundtrack, adds a retro/sci-fi backdrop with some excellent orchestral scores that fit nearly perfectly.
> Nine Inch Nails: Hesistation Marks - their newest album which I just so happen to listen to whilst playing the Forever series, which actually works quite well with a electro/industrial ambience.
> Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon - inexplicably works very well. I guess the bright colours in the game just makes me feel a bit trippy, yo.
> Clutch: Blast Tyrant - because who doesn't want some bluesy hard rock to eviscerate space ships to? I know I do.
> A Shell In The Pit/Tellix/Rogue Legacy Soundtrack - nothing, nothing, suits retro games more than this superb 8-bit soundtrack with awesome orchestral and rock elements.
I'd love to see what you guys listen to whilst playing !!
inb4: general music tastes. no conflicts though :c

I basically listen exclusively to remixes from the Touhou project, a shmup series with a high level of difficulty, an improbably female cast (that gets objectified far more than I find comfortable, and awesome music.
Most of the remixes are either the orchestral/epic music sort, while others are more along the lines of rock.
Sometimes I'll throw in some German music as well, Eisbrecher I enjoy quite a bit.

Kirana: What's a shmup? Is it like some sort of web series or some jazz? I've listened to TED pod casts whilst playing too, then I'm learning and being unproductive on Forever! As for German music, I've not heard of Eisbrecher, but I have heard of Seeed, which are quite awesome. What's Eisbrecher like? Perez: You like Savant too, eh? I don't make many musical forays into that genre of music, but I have to say that I love Savant, very interesting production of music! Mirrors Edge and Portal are two great games too, with equally cool soundtracks! I can't say I've heard of the other tracks but as you recommend them, I'll listen to them today

I'm kind of an all-around music lover -- I listen to what I find listenable. Jazz and blues are equally worthy as electronic rock and glitch. To me, that is. 'Course I like Savant, his tunes are catchy as heck! And the main reason to why I put Portal's "Still Alive" in there, is because I experience too many of these near-death situations, hehe.
I've been listening to some of your suggestions as well (:

Am I right in thinking that upbeat and often "epic" music suits best? Perhaps with the retro flare that "Still Alive" and Savant have?

Yes! Absolutely! The game has the same aesthetics as an arcade game, if you ask me.

Definitely! Just like Asteroids, which was way before my time, but that doesn't mean I haven't played it, and there's clear inspiration from it

Alright, small explanation post coming. "Shmup" is short for "shoot 'em up", or a top/side scrolling 2D shooter game. Captain Foraxian's a good example. I'll just put youtube links in of musical stuff that I like, for examples. xP - Example for Eisbrecher, probably one of their better ones. - Touhou remix example. - Another Touhou remix example. 47 minutes of music here, woah!

Ahh! I remember now, I watch quite a few Lets Play-ers on Youtube and they explained that the other day. Well, now I remember! So arcade-type stuff, then? I'll give 'em a gander now!
EDIT: Starting from the bottom-up, bloody hell this is epic. And celtic-ish. Sounds good to me!

This seems like an appropriate place to display my attempt at fan music soundcloud.com/therealarien/forever-captainIt's fairly basic and chiptune-y. I drew inspiration from the subtle melody of the guns and expanded on it. I'm greatly inspired by the TRON OST, C418 (music from Minecraft), Disasterpeace (FEZ). Anything with the retro vibe is coooool.

Songs that I like:
Red September - when in massive battles or hunting for parts Mystery Train - boss battles, or out in the middle of nowhere Suspect Packages - O2 gets low, or massive damage is taken
This artist, I can't really explain: Jake Chudnow
All of these are on Audio Network or Soundcloud.
Kirana: Did you know that Soundcloud is German?
