Welcome to the first ever...
Dawn Star Succession Game!
*No relation to Captain Successor.
What is a succession game, you might ask? Well, I lifted the idea from the Dwarf Fortress community: a save file that gets passed around between several people, who all chip in on the final result. Someone goes first, and posts their save file, and then the next person downloads it, and plays some, and uploads the current version... and the cycle continues! Where in Dwarf Fortress each player would take their turn managing all the silly dorfs and building their personalized wing of an epic underground fortress, in the Dawn Star each player would fly the ship for some time, explore, and add their touch to what we hope will be the ultimate cumulative starship design!
Here are the rules:
- If you die in any way (asphyxiation or just getting blown up), you can choose to abort your turn or try again. If you give up, the next person in line gets the save file you got, effectively getting your turn from you. Unlike what I said previously, I won't stop you from trying again. I can sympathize with the troubles of bad luck (say, something irritatingly stupid like cruise controlling into a hot rock). If you do retry, just re-download the save file from the previous iteration.
- On the other hand, if you get close to dying but don't (i.e. surviving a fight with the majority of your ship destroyed), I'd recommend you don't retry your turn unless the game seems unwinnable, like being trapped in India space with a lone command mod. A catastrophic fall and subsequent rebuilding is excellent story, which is the main goal of this succession game.
- Try not to totally redesign the ship you're given. Respect what other people have built. You can (and should!) tweak, upgrade, and expand the ship to make it work for you, but try not to undo any work that's already been done.
- Don't spend a huge amount of time on your turn, or advance the ship too far. I don't have any specific limits here, but I'd say that as a rule of thumb, don't advance more than 2 tiers without good reason. Good reason here means "if it makes for a good story". For instance, if you find a near-immobile Golf cruiser while only at Delta tier, and you wear him down and steal all his stuff, that's okay because it makes for a great story piece even though you're leaping up three tiers.
- When you upload your save file after playing, make a story of what happened to you! Maybe it was terribly uneventful, or maybe there was "that one" Echo balancer that had 2 oxy tanks and you just couldn't pass him up, or maybe you had a "close shave" with a wall of Juliet torpedoes! Whatever it is, tell us about it. It's part of the fun! We want this epic battleship to have an equally epic tale behind it.
- To get into this succession game, you have to just apply by posting in the thread and saying you want to play. You don't have to call the next slot, you can be in a later slot if you want -- but obviously, if no one calls 3rd, and it comes time, the person who called 4th will now be 3rd, and so on.
- You are now all allowed to go twice. But newcomers, please step up to help pilot the Successor!
Save file? What's my save file?
The Dawn Star stores its save files in your computer's application data directory, or more specifically, Adobe Flash's "shared objects" folder. Your save file is actually composed of several files, all of which must be used in tandem to properly describe a game:
- captain-jameson-freq.sol
- captain-jameson-meta.sol
- captain-jameson-options.sol
- captain-jameson-ship.sol
- captain-jameson-verse.sol
On Windows machines, you can find these files by punching %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\ into Run, then searching for a folder called TDS.7.swf within. I'm not sure where to find these files on Macs or Linux; you could just search for the TDS.7.swf folder, but that could take a while if you're searching your entire system. I presume that if you're running Linux you should be able to figure it out for yourself.
To participate in the succession game, first BACK UP YOUR OWN SAVE FILES in some way, perhaps by moving them to a new folder inside the TDS.7.swf folder or on your desktop. If you don't do this, your personal ship WILL be overwritten and lost forever. Then download the most recent zip file to the game's save folder, unzip it so the five .sol files are all in the same place (and not in any subfolders), and open The Dawn Star Build 7 in your browser. If all goes well, you'll notice that the game has seamlessly replaced your progress with the succession game!
Then you can play!
Once you're done, close the tab or window containing The Dawn Star and return to the TDS.7.swf folder. The save files you unzipped have been modified while you were playing the game, reflecting your new progress. Select them all and add them to a ZIP file (or I suppose some other sort of archive if you want) and host it on the Internet in some way, whether you attach the file to your post on this forum or put it on Dropbox or whatever. I'll add your link to the table and then the next person in line can play. If you want to return to playing your normal game afterwards, you can replace the succession game's save files with your personal ones without a problem.
Don't forget to add your story when you upload your save file!
NOTE: You have to do this save-copying process manually. The in-game DATA EXPORT/IMPORT features do not work properly and won't produce a working save file.
NOTE 2: There have been issues reported when trying to use this save file on browsers other than the one it was created on (Firefox). You may need to use Firefox to play in the succession game. Thankfully, Firefox is cross-platform, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

[ CONTROL OBTAINED BY Ozzatron ]
Enthralled by the tales of a derelict to the northeast, I set out to find it instantly upon arriving in the sector! Little did I know, however, that I had gone a bit too far east, and I paid dearly, losing much of the simple Alpha and Bravo scrap I had acquired to some nasty Charlie jackers. I kept hopefully searching, sifting through the asteroid field with naught but a single booster and a Prismatic Laser Charlie attached to my command mod -- the latter being a grisly trophy from the jackers that had wrecked my previous design. My survival in the sector was hinging on this derelict! And soon enough, I found it... what a beauty it was! A good amount of everything: girders, uniboosters, and standard lasers! I carefully blasted the wreck apart and mounted the less-damaged parts and left the rest adrift. It was terribly wasteful, but I hadn't yet discovered any Repair or Scrap stations of the Charlie tier, and I wasn't taking any chances with asphyxiation or an overweight ship...
[ CONTROL PASSED TO Admiral Kirana ]
The northeast clearly seems to be the way to go here. Following an SOS trail led to the same Charlie and Bravo warships that demolished the first of the designs. The ship from the first build managed to power its way through them without much difficulty, and stumbled upon a pair of Charlie complexes without guardians. They'll make for an excellent base for springboarding to higher levels, but the area is not 100% safe. Delta snipe laser fighters frequent the area between the complexes, and while the warship is now fully capable of taking them down it is still unadvised to take them lightly. Possible exploration will likely be done to the east - a Nav Charlie is visible on the maps, but Echo ships appear to have made that area their hunting ground.
Our warship is now a Delta cruiser of some size. She's a little clumsy, but the heavy armaments will prove useful and the structuring is fairly durable. You'll find yourself standing and fighting more than running and flanking.
[ CONTROL PASSED TO Foohman ]
Following an SOS signal to the South-East, it became apparent that this was an area of Echo tier warships, so thrusters were cut to a intermittent charge to allow the first shots to be fired to be our own. The communications from these ships indicated they were Balancers, passive ones at that, which allowed me to place the shots I needed the most. Our luck shot up as the first ship spotted featured standard boosters, deckplates, lasers and shields. There was, however, an issue as to the placement of the shields - wedged either side of the command module, in between two deckplates. There was no other way to attain these parts without sacrificing a shield. Despite its size, the vessel was considerably maneuverable, countering even the extremely capable strafing ability the current design held, and the snipe launchers were lost in glancing hits from the Echo lasers. Once the battle was done, I quickly snagged all the parts roughly to the rear of the ship and activated the Oxy Station in the Charlie-tier Hector Base. From here, I began raiding the two other Echo Balancers, taking their parts as strategically as possible.
Build 3 of the Successor features a strong armoured deckplate with a full complement of four Echo lasers covered by an Echo shield. The sides of the deckplate are buffered with Delta lasers, shields and Echo girders. The rear of the ship is given over to mostly engines left over from the previous build, with Echo lasers covering the rear. The forward thrust of the ship is considerable, and the strafe is still notable, yet the turning speed is somewhat lacking, although not at all poor.
>>>ADDITIONAL INFO: Connected to Hector Base is a Bravo complex featuring a Warehouse filled with Bravo MK.II Boosters.

I tried to wave the smoke from my eyes, but I couldn't. I was in a command module, and the smoke wasn't going anywhere. I needed to find a repair mech, and fast. I couldn't see any on my nav map, just a smudge to the north east that could be... what? I wasn't sure. A lone nav station just outside the atmosphere promised to tell more, but a pamphlet-waving zealot drone blocked my path. I couldn't exactly squeeze past it given my enormous bulk. Heck I could barely turn this thing around. I'd have to do something about that later. The drone ignored my warning shots, as expected, so with a sigh I pummeled it to stardust and pushed ahead. The nav station showed... something. And asteroids. Good enough, I figured. I shifted some standard boosters to the rear flanks for extra rotation, and to give the ship a stylish drift. I figured it'd match the smoke. Out here, you've got to find your own fun.
The "smudge" turned out to be exactly what I wanted - Echo repair, Echo scrap, and Echo upgrade. I fed some drones through the scrapper's gate, patched up the ship, and returned it to Hector Base. I reckon the next captain might find a use for the bravo MkIIs in the warehouse, especially if they make a trip to the Echo upgrade. Maybe this old barge will find some speed to match its swagger.
[ CONTROL PASSED TO #UNKNOWNPILOT! < iaanacho > ]
>> WARNING: PILOT NOT FOUND IN OFFICIAL RECORDS.
I have accepted a job to assist as a temporary pilot for a big ship called the Dawn Star. Just a few days, so the client can rest up after a few other pilots took the craft through turbulent space. Coming aboard, Gregg Howard, the main pilot has in formed me of the specs of his ship. A tight turning and heavy armoured ship. I can tell this trip will be fun. As the consoles blink back to life, radio chatter from nearby ships alerts us of the nearby Faget Base to the north has fallen to the bootjackers. I suggest we go and he agrees.
After a few tight squeezes through an asteroid field, we arrive to find the bootjacker waiting for us. Man I have to get a radar like that.
I don’t know how a military instillation fell to bootjacker like this one, he wasn’t even worth target practice at how fast he fell. The commander of the base, Jill Williams wasn’t happy after a few of our lasers fried the solar arrays on her repair mech. 'Such is the price for safety sometimes,' I told her. She wasnt happy and ordered us out of the base.
To our northeast were a bunch of balancers and angry space ilk, doing sick burnouts and firing missiles at us for no reason. They blew up a repair module toting chap, poor guy, all he wanted to do was spread the word about Lord Smooze. One quick looting and an evac later we were heading east.
Some uneventful rescues later we were turned away by more space ilk armed with mining beams, lasers and teeth, mostly lasers and mining beams, although the teeth were pretty scary. We returned to Fort Neptune to rest up. I'm gonna miss poor Gregg, he wasn’t happy about how I took his ship into unneeded danger but without a radar, I couldn’t have known about those mining ships. Ill head off now, and to whomever reads my note, beware to the northwest, Camp Sputnik will be swarmed with many enemy ships, I don’t wanna know what Gregg, or his hired pilots did to offend them.
PS: I don’t think I did too well either, he kept saying something along the lines of all those crazy pilots will get me killed one day.
Whomever the next pilot is, get that guy some rest, and maybe a snack, he has no snacks.

A map of the path taken on the session is provided above to assist with the summary.
Upon beginning the sessions, we started out with a fairly nimble Foxtrot and Echo-type warship with strong frontal and side firepower for its type. Very easy to fly, and proved to be a great hull to build off of. Remind me to buy the previous pilot some extra oxygen or something.
At point 1, highly aggressive Needlers with Prismatic Lasers charged the warship here. They pockmarked the Successor's surface with laser blasts and managed to tear off several propulsion modules and much of the broadside lasers. There wasn't much to sift through in terms of wreckages, so taking shelter from them in the nearby station complex was a must. After a short stop to regain oxygen, it was decided to plot a course to the northwest as a Nav station was just barely in range of the radar setup.
At point 2, a massive warband marks its territory around here. I am not sure if they are renegade military fellows, mercenaries, or what, but they were highly aggressive and seemed to be organized. Most of the activity in the piloting session occurred over here.
Upon arriving here, half a dozen warships, mostly smaller Golf-types, rushed to engage. They weren't too much of a threat due to their slow turning speed, however one, named Medusa, was quite nimble and put up a decent fight (although he ended up destroying all of his frontal lasers on his own accord. The fellow must've not realized he had Prismatics and not regular Lasers!)
And then there was the Moira. Holy sh*t, the Moira.
Obviously one of the top dogs of this little faction, the last of the six ships that roared into view was an utterly terrifying sight. Easily seventy meters across, with every inch of it covered with Hotel-type boosters and Prismatic Lasers. One salvo from this warship would spell near-certain death.
Of course, it would also spell certain death for all his friends too. Using the warship's speed to kite around Moira, one by one each of his cohorts was torn into so much scrap metal as the giant fired indiscriminately in an attempt to demolish the warship, ignoring his allies' pleas for mercy. It wouldn't surprise me if the Moira's captain was in some kind of a blind rage.
Eventually, only two ships remained - the Successor and the Moira. Obviously this leviathan was not going to go down easily, but the Successor now had Golf Prismatics salvaged from the wreckage of the other ships of the warband. Keeping to the sides and clever piloting helped in luring the beast back to the station complex near point 1, where we could fight it on our own terms.
The Moira was quickly starting to show signs it was weakening, with much of the frontal Prismatics torn off and with massive damage to its truss systems. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite done yet. Lining up for a kill-shot on the Command Module, the Moira managed one last salvo with its remaining frontal Prismatics that tore off nearly half the stern of the ship and would have likely annihilated the Successor completely had it been closer.
Then the colossus finally died. The right side of the ship was mostly intact when it went down, so we repurposed the trusses and girders for our own ship. Most of the Prismatics were knocked out in its death throes, sadly, so only four of the Hotel Prismatics were salvageable. A quick rebuild of the Successor to accomodate the new parts proved successful, and after testing the new setup out on a couple stragglers of the warband, the ship arrived at point 3.
The immediate area around point 3 looks to be a great mid-to-high tier complex, with an Upgrade Golf (indicated by a blue outline on the map) in the west and a Warehouse Foxtrot filled to the brim with Primary Boosters. The Successor is currently located where the heart symbol on the map is. There are some very high level ships nearby the complexes with unknown compositions, however, so extreme caution is likely a good idea for future pilots.
The warship is now a more compact Golf and Hotel-type ship. It's slightly slower than the previous configuration and lacks broadside firepower, but it has strong frontal shields and an array of heavy Prismatic lasers on the front, as well as a pair of Lances for knife-fighting range.
[ CONTROL PASSED TO Captain Michaela Nul'dolaer ]
I found many Hotel & India bootjackers around the area along with upgrade and repair shops. Some parts were grazed from the previous iteration of the Successor, so, I repaired as many parts as possible. Some Balanceists were abound, but friendly. However, near the nav station, a massive India barge, Zeus, appeared. Knowing that rushing into battle always ends badly, I kited around the station without engaging, and headed south into the asteroid field. By blasting & mining a few gigantic asteroids, I was able to boost our cash to 10,000.
Strangely, an India ship, Caesar, was in the middle of a thick wall of normal/hot rocks. I blew out the wall, but he fired 2 waves of prismatics in an ambush, nearly slicing the port in half. Luckily, the bubble shields saved it from utter obliteration. I talked with (and sometimes fought) various ships around the field. Even though I had acquired Hotel scrap, many of the boosters were still of Foxtrot rank, so I cruised around the area, occasionally returning to the base for oxygen. I decided that it was getting a little boring around here, so I headed out a little further to the northwest.
That is when a bizarre event happened. A few minutes after leaving the oxygen field, my field of vision was blurred with static. Impossible, I thought, There's no Guardian traps around here!
I was pinned up against an asteroid, with a gigantic India barge saying, "Your unbalanced vessel is repulsive! India ****** heading 225!" Fuck!! I knew that I was ambushed!! Goddammit!!
Cursing at the Balanceist, I repeatedly rammed him and took aim at his stern. Volleying it, he soon launched a wall of torpedoes at my starboard. I went to turn, but it was already too late. The booster lineup was decimated. Quickly reorganizing the lasers, I swayed to the side, trying not to hurt myself. He then, with a horrendous shot to the port, started spinning out rapidly. Finally, he starts to fail. I clipped his command mod with my lance, and a great "boom" was heard.
It was over. His parts drifting in space, I exchanged them out from mine. When I was about to yell in victory, a dreadful "beep beep beep" was heard. My oxygen was at critical!! I sprung into action. Using cruise control, I sped back to the Foxtrot complex. I was at 2. Oh you better hold together you bastard. 1. Fucking shit!!! I'm gonna die!! I'm gonna die!! Shit shit shit noooooooooooooo......
Whoom. I fell into the atmosphere, the oxygen covering the ship like a silk blanket. I sighed, knowing that I finally had peace. Going to the repair mech, with my ship getting a much needed heal, I smiled. Then I was gladly approaching the upgrade station, and a "beep beep!" was heard. Lovely.
Our ship is now a complete Golf-India replica, with better offense on the sides, and 1 more Mark II booster. The Successor is almost complete....

"Looks like I have to see this to completion, if I started it..."
( I was writing a wondrous story for this, then the tab abruptly reloaded for no reason. I lost over an hour of work. Damnit. Well, the first half of the story is going to be rather abridged. )
In the months I left the Successor mission abandoned, it seems that the sector has fallen back into chaos. I immediately set out to combat the encroaching hordes of jackers closing in on the giant Golf station set that my fellow pilots seem to call home.
I went northwest, was almost killed by an India warship, then moved all his parts into an oxygen field and rebuilt the Successor. It took me about 20 minutes to rebuild it, because I tore the entire thing apart. I tried to keep to the spirit of the previous design, however.
She's a bit more rectangular, a bit less armed to the teeth (most of her weapons were destroyed in the fight) but thanks to Primary Booster Indias, has a far, far higher top speed. The Successor now also sports Torpedo Launcher Indias, which, as I learned the hard way, hit like trucks. At least now the remainder of those jackers can get a taste of their own medicine.
Pleased with the Successor's new armaments, I went on to judiciously destroy every single decently-tiered jacker I could see on my map. Those who stayed far away were worn down by the Snipers, and those who came close ate a face full of torpedoes. It was wonderful. There were just two things left... the clouds of Juliet ships. I wasn't sure the Successor could take them in her current state. She had full India shielding around her front deck, but Juliet lasers are nothing to joke about. It only takes four to break an India shield, and if you're unlucky, you have twenty such lasers flying at you at once, if not more. Such is the way of Juliet dreadnoughts.
Nevertheless, it needed to be done. I cautiously approached the Juliet cloud to the north. As much as I personally consider Juliet technology to be a work of art (I even have found myself calling it "pearlescent white beauty" on a few occasions), I fear it as much as I respect it. Ships boasting Juliet pieces, let alone those made entirely of Juliet material, are more often than not silent behemoths of destruction. Juliet lasers tear through the largest asteroids in a matter of seconds; the ramming spikes are almost certainly capable of destroying small moons in a single blow.
The comms flared. I jumped out of my musing.
(brenda.lowery@menelaus) Mother! Mother! Mother! Mother!
Oh god damn it, they're needlers. Equipped with photon lances, no less!
I dodged a few Juliet lasers and quickly vaporized the needler with a barrage of torpedoes. She laughed as her ship burst apart and I mounted the one Photon Lance that remained front and center. Sure it wasn't under the shields, but I knew it'd be useful in the coming battles. Thankfully, as primarily melee needlers, this first group of Juliet craft wasn't going to be difficult to handle; they didn't exactly have the easiest time moving about with only one thruster. Perhaps my initial reaction of fear was a bit extreme.
With the needlers down I headed south for an oxygen refill, and then east, towards the hot rocks and what I was expecting to be the main event. I had mounted all the surviving Photon Lances on the edges of the Successor, making her shell a viciously barbed one. After my previous near-death experience at the hands of the India cruiser I wasn't about to take any chances about relying only on front-mounted weaponry. The reckoning was at hand, or so I figured. I had fought my way through jacker-infested sectors before, and usually your first encounter with a Juliet craft in a sector is not something you forget.
I crept through the northwestern edge of the hot rocks carefully. Apparently, beyond the horde of India and Juliet ships there was a Golf station with oxygen. I debated going around the rocks entirely and attacking from another direction, where I could bring the battles back into oxygen fields so I could fight on my own terms. I wanted to know what I was up against first, though. Besides, I knew jackers weren't too bright -- perhaps fighting them literally in the middle of a sea of flaming asteroids would work in my favor. I wasn't sure which was going to be more effective, caution or trying to take advantage of their brazen aggression.
I rounded the corner of one particularly giant hot rock and found the answer right in front of me. An extremely deadly Juliet dreadnought covered in prismatic lasers was... stuck on a hot rock trying to attack me. Its entire left wing melted out of existence against the incredibly hot asteroid as it blasted the rock with waves of Juliet lasers to no avail. With the ship crippled, I moved in to strike, careful of the rear-mounted prismatic lasers the craft boasted.
Despite being rudely interrupted by a charging India ship (which I crippled as well, causing it to spiral into the enormous hot rock and cease to exist), I managed to finish off the Juliet dreadnought before he could flee. He was surprisingly mobile despite being so damaged. I escaped with only a few liters of oxygen remaining, as I made sure to equip as many Prismatic Laser Juliets as survived the fight. The risk was definitely worth it. With one of the most powerful spaceship-mounted weapons in the universe at my disposal, surely I could return around to the Golf oxygen station and tear apart the remaining jackers.
As it turned out, the Golf station set had not been visited yet. I activated the oxygen station with a tiny portion of my massive fortune and then checked out the nav station. Apparently there was an even more distant station to the northeast, but for now, I had to deal with the infernal horde. Interestingly enough, they seemed to follow my tastes in weaponry: ramming spikes and prismatic lasers. Perhaps I would have an easier time beating a foe I understood well.
Even more interestingly, the non-Juliet ships were Balancers. I wouldn't have to kill them after all. The Balancers tend to keep to themselves. Even better, they wouldn't attack me while I handled the aggressive Juliet dreadnoughts that shared the space with them.
Several hard-fought battles ensued. Many of the Balancers that I was planning to leave alone were caught in the crossfire of Juliet blasts, their parts sent adrift to burn to cinders on the fiery asteroids. There was nothing I could do about it; honestly, I was amazed the aggressive jackers hadn't taken out the Balancers yet on their own, without me here to provoke them.
I then headed towards the cloaked station in the northeast, bracing myself for one hell of a fight. If the prismatic-wielding Juliet ships were any indicator, whatever was guarding this station would be the mother of all titans. I slowly approached it, waiting for the warning notification they always seem to give to intruders.
(tracy.evans@ares) Leave this place.
A Bravo guardian? Are you serious? Three seconds later I found out all she was guarding was a factory that produced Twin Booster Charlies. Well, that was a waste of my time.
I trudged back to the Golf oxygen haven next to the infernal abyss and exited the remote terminal, feeling relatively secure with every jacker in a couple kilometers turned into glowing dust or fed to a hot rock (or both).
This is the Successor as she stands now.
The twelve Prismatic Laser Juliets on the front side project a ludicrous kill fan of 270o. With many of the new Booster Juliets mounted retro, she turns much quicker than she used to, while the Primary Booster Indias keep her top speed remarkable for a craft her size. She may not be perfect, but she's come a long way.

I was editing my ship when suddenly, a delta ship passed by and tried to blow me up. Luckily I was maneuverable and managed to escape before getting hit with the delta's lasers, so I got away, redesigned my ship, then went back and absolutely destroyed the jacker!
I was drifting off into dark space for about 5 minutes... only noticing I was at low oxygen when it hit critical. I cruised controlled it back to the OXY generator and paid to turn it on. I was so lucky there was an OXY station there, had another second passed I would have been a deadhead ship.
I saw some Golf/Hotel tiers in plain space so I went over to them. Oddly, they were stuck inside each other. Very funny! XD
As the two ships were stuck inside of each other, one of them got destroyed and I took all of its parts. I can't remember which one it was but it was one of them.
P.S. I nabbed a chrono.
