I feel you on the scrap scarcity. Was so relieved to finally find a golf level scrap over east. Farbs did mention that this one would be more difficult, though I'm not sure in what way exactly.
I do like the smaller size. You can easily rub shoulders with the I/J crowd as a measly echo without even really meaning to. Does make it a smidge more exciting I think. Plus if you're REALLY clever you could loom some high level ships until they kill each other and reap the benefits. I almost got there with some Juliets but wasn't patient enough.
The map situation is a bit tedious I agree. With Jameson you had the @ but had the option to turn it off. To make up for it I just position my cursor over my module then press F2, which gives me a pretty accurate read. Still can't wait for the updated graphics!! *squeeee*

My issue wasn't scarcity of scrap, it was scarcity of reasonable-tier scrappers. Then again, it was my fault for not exploring as much as I probably should have. I hung out in the west for a long time, where the highest scrapper was an SF -- except it was unusable because it was guarded by Hotel-tier enemies with snipers. The consolation prize was several SDs. There was a Prismatic Golf factory... and a Prismatic India factory... but I couldn't get the credits required for either because Delta scrap only gets you so far.
I thought I could outmaneuver the Hotel snipers in my speedy Foxtrot melee cruiser. I was sadly mistaken, and I lost almost everything, literally. I became a needler, with only a single Echo spike and Foxtrot booster. I managed to rebuild though, but I didn't challenge those guys again. Instead I decided that the west was a lost cause and I chose to go explore to the east. I found the SG Arien mentioned, along with a mess of other goodies. I felt pretty good about myself, having upgraded to Golf tier and raked in something like 20,000 credits.
Then I made the mistake of checking out that locked station set southeast of the NI/OI. (It's named Grohl Base, by the way.)
The first thing I saw was a Scrapper Juliet. I figured that the guardian, which I hadn't seen yet, would get stuck behind the scrapper once he spawned and I'd be able to walk away free. No such luck. I got trapped between the scrapper and his line of fire. I paused the game and thought for 5 minutes, desperately trying to develop an escape plan. Eventually, my spinning around and flying in small circles caused him to dislodge himself from his position, but the only new path was to get behind him. I couldn't run away, really, because he'd shoot the rear of my ship with Juliet lasers and destroy me.
I had to fight him, and I did. A few minutes of extremely tense maneuvering and wearing him down with Golf and Hotel lasers later, I took him down. I didn't have enough money to activate the oxygen station (20,000 credits), so I then had to make a mad break for a nearby Foxtrot station (I didn't have the money to activate the OI either). I entered the atmosphere with 4/35L oxygen left.
This is why I like this version of The Dawn Star. It lends itself to incredible, unexpected challenges.

Can someone please explain to me why torpedoes or energy balls collide into yourself if you go too fast? I am really getting sick of that.
